Macron joins Eliud Kipchoge for morning jog in Nairobi during Africa Forward Summit
French President Emmanuel Macron hits Nairobi streets for a morning run with Eliud Kipchoge on May 11, 2026.

NAIROBI, Kenya — French President Emmanuel Macron traded diplomatic meetings for running shoes on Monday morning after joining Kenyan marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge for a jog through the streets of Nairobi during his official visit to Kenya.

The French president, who is attending the Africa Forward Summit in the Kenyan capital, was seen jogging alongside the two-time Olympic marathon champion in a relaxed early morning session that quickly attracted attention across social media platforms.

Macron wore a navy blue track shirt with thick white stripes on the sleeves, black shorts and blue running shoes, while Kipchoge appeared composed in matching athletic gear as the pair maintained a steady pace through sections of Nairobi.

Trailing behind them was a group of runners alongside members of the presidential security team, creating a rare public spectacle involving a sitting French president and one of Africa’s most celebrated athletes.

Observers noted that the two appeared engaged in conversation during the run, adding a symbolic touch to the growing diplomatic and cultural ties between Kenya and France.

Sports meets diplomacy in Nairobi

The jog offered a lighter and more personal moment away from the formal atmosphere surrounding the high-level Africa Forward Summit, which officially opened in Nairobi on Monday.

The summit has brought together heads of state, policymakers, investors and innovators from across Africa and Europe to discuss trade, climate action, infrastructure, technology and economic partnerships.

Macron is among the key international leaders attending the two-day event, which is co-hosted by William Ruto and the French government.

Kenya and France have already signed several bilateral agreements linked to renewable energy, digital transformation, transport infrastructure, agriculture and education during the summit.

Diplomatic sources say discussions are also expected to focus on reforming global financing systems, increasing investment flows into African economies and strengthening cooperation in innovation and green growth sectors.

Kipchoge’s global influence beyond athletics

Kipchoge’s appearance alongside Macron further reinforced his growing stature beyond athletics, where he has become a global symbol of discipline, endurance and mental resilience.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest marathon runners in history, the Kenyan athlete remains internationally celebrated for becoming the first man to run a marathon in under two hours during the INEOS 1:59 Challenge in Vienna in 2019, although the feat was not officially recognised as a world record due to controlled race conditions.

The former Olympic champion has increasingly featured in global conversations around leadership, wellness and human potential, earning admiration from political leaders, business executives and sports fans worldwide.

His training philosophy and motivational approach have also made him one of Kenya’s most internationally recognisable sporting figures.

Kenya positions Nairobi as diplomatic hub

For Kenya, hosting the Africa Forward Summit marks another major diplomatic milestone as Nairobi continues positioning itself as a regional centre for international dialogue, innovation and investment.

The summit has attracted delegations from across Africa, including presidents, prime ministers, foreign ministers and representatives of international organisations and multinational corporations.

Analysts say Macron’s visit reflects France’s renewed engagement strategy in Africa at a time when geopolitical competition on the continent is intensifying and traditional alliances are evolving.

The visit also comes amid growing efforts by African governments to attract investment into technology, renewable energy and infrastructure development sectors as economies recover from global financial pressures and climate-related challenges.
