NAIROBI, Kenya — The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecast continued rainfall across several parts of the country over the next two days, warning of thunderstorms, temperature extremes and strong winds in some regions.

In an outlook covering April 13 to 14, Acting Director Edward Muriuki said the country will experience a mixed weather pattern characterised by intermittent sunshine, scattered showers and thunderstorms in key regions.

According to the forecast, rainfall will persist in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Coast and parts of Northeastern Kenya.

In the Highlands West of the Rift Valley—including Kisumu, Kericho and Nakuru—isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected in some areas during the night, followed by morning rains and afternoon storm development after brief sunny intervals.

A similar pattern is expected in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, Nyeri, Murang’a and Kiambu, where evening and night showers will give way to morning rainfall and renewed afternoon thunderstorms.

In the southeastern lowlands, including Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado and Taita Taveta, residents should expect scattered nighttime showers, morning rainfall and intermittent afternoon thunderstorms.

Coastal counties such as Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu and Tana River will also experience overnight showers, light morning rain along the coastline and isolated thunderstorms later in the day.

The northeastern region, including Wajir, Garissa, Mandera and Marsabit, will experience mostly scattered rainfall activity, with localized showers and thunderstorms.

“Showers and thunderstorms are expected over a few places tonight around Wajir,” Muriuki said, noting that rainfall will remain unevenly distributed across the region.

In contrast, northwestern Kenya, particularly Turkana and Samburu, is expected to remain largely dry, with partly cloudy skies and sunny intervals.

The department has also warned of strong southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 m/s) in parts of Turkana and Marsabit, which could affect transport, aviation and outdoor activities.

Temperatures are expected to vary significantly across the country. Coastal, southeastern lowlands and northern regions will record highs above 30°C, with Lodwar expected to reach up to 38°C.

In contrast, cooler conditions will persist in high-altitude areas, with night temperatures dropping below 10°C in parts of the Central Rift Valley and Highlands East.

Kericho and Laikipia are expected to record some of the lowest temperatures, around 10°C, reflecting sharp regional contrasts.

The forecast also highlighted minor variations in daylight hours across the country. Mombasa will experience sunrise at 6:25 a.m. and sunset at 6:22 p.m., while Kisumu will see sunrise at 6:38 a.m. and sunset at 6:44 p.m.

The Met Department urged residents to stay updated with daily forecasts, warning that weather conditions may change rapidly, particularly in areas prone to afternoon thunderstorms and strong winds.

“This forecast should be used in conjunction with the daily (24-hour) and five-day forecasts issued by this Department. County specific forecasts are available from the offices of respective County Directors of Meteorological Services,” Muriuki said.
