IBAGWA, Nigeria — A Nigerian army officer, a medical doctor identified as Lieutenant Samson Haruna, has reportedly died after sustaining severe burns in an alleged domestic violence incident where he was set on fire by his wife.

The incident occurred at the Wellington Bassey Barracks in Ibagwa, Akwa Ibom State, according to security analyst and counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama.

The tragic event reportedly unfolded on September 22, 2025. Lieutenant Haruna had a heated argument with his wife, Mrs. Samson Haruna.

A source quoted detailed the devastating escalation of the dispute: “The officer had a heated argument with his wife, Mrs Retyit Obadiah Dalong Samson Haruna, which resulted in her dousing him with petrol and setting him on fire.”

Lieutenant Haruna was initially stabilized at the Military Reference Section (MRS) within the barracks before being transferred for specialized treatment.

“The officer sustained severe burns and was immediately stabilized at the Military Reference Section (MRS) in the barracks before being evacuated to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital for further management,” the source added. He succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment on Tuesday, October 7.

Army condemns the act and calls for calm

In a statement released on Tuesday, October 7, the Uyo State Army Public Relations Assistant Director, Lawal Muhammad, condemned the officer’s killing and expressed sympathy for the bereaved family.
