NAIROBI, Kenya — Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has formally announced his political allegiance, confirming that he has joined the Jubilee Party. The announcement puts to rest weeks of speculation regarding the political platform he intends to use for his anticipated 2027 presidential campaign.

Speaking on Sunday, Matiang’i revealed that he accepted an invitation from former President Uhuru Kenyatta to join the party following his attendance at the National Delegates Conference (NDC) last month.

“I am openly saying I have joined the Jubilee Party. Just as we said during the NDC, now is the time to align ourselves with the Jubilee Party,” said Matiang’i.

The former CS asserted that he has taken up the task of revitalizing the former ruling party, intending to rebuild it into a robust national movement. He encouraged hopeful candidates eyeing various electoral seats in the 2027 general election under the Jubilee banner to publicly identify with the party’s symbols.

“All these aspirants who are here eyeing different seats should now wear Jubilee Party colours during our next meeting. I also have my Jubilee Party hat here,” Matiang’i stated.

Matiang’i, who had reportedly been considering options between the Jubilee Party and the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) party, detailed his immediate plans for the party’s rejuvenation.

He announced that he would soon commence the opening of Jubilee offices in various parts of the country, starting with Embakasi and Kitengela.

Furthermore, he confirmed that the party will hold grassroots elections as part of the strategy to prepare for the 2027 polls.

Matiang’i had previously announced plans for a nationwide tour to rally support among party members. He elaborated on this process on Friday, October 3, stating: ”The party has its organs in place; the special NDC was the beginning of that process. Several activities will take place, including recruitment and reorganisation of the party, and then choosing a presidential candidate for the party will happen.”

He concluded by underscoring his commitment to engaging directly with the party base: “That is why I am talking to party members at the grassroots; this is just the beginning because I am going to visit all 47 counties in the country to meet party members. After all, there is a nomination to take place within the party.”
