KIAMBU, Kenya — Five suspects facing robbery with violence charges have escaped from Limuru Police Station in Kiambu County after allegedly overpowering police officers during a late-night confrontation.
According to a police report, the incident occurred at approximately 11pm on Wednesday, November 4, when officers opened the male cells to transfer 10 detainees to an inner room.
The situation reportedly turned chaotic moments after the detainees were moved out of the cell, with some of the suspects attempting to break free.
Officers on duty raised the alarm and called for reinforcement after realising they were being overpowered. However, the confrontation escalated when additional officers arrived and were reportedly attacked by the fleeing suspects.
Five detainees subsequently escaped from the station, prompting an immediate security response and a search for the missing suspects.
A team of Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers from the headquarters in Nairobi was dispatched to assist in tracing the escapees.
The circumstances surrounding the incident are likely to come under scrutiny, particularly how the suspects managed to overpower officers and flee from a police facility.
Embu police station escape raises further concerns
The Limuru incident comes barely two weeks after four suspects escaped from Itabua Police Station in Embu County, raising fresh questions about security arrangements and supervision in police detention facilities.
The four detainees reportedly escaped in late October after creating an opening in the wall of their holding cell. Their disappearance was discovered during a routine inspection, prompting officers to raise the alarm and search the station and surrounding areas.
The escapees were being held over separate cases involving murder, robbery with violence and theft, according to reports from the incident.
The two incidents involved different circumstances, but both have drawn attention to vulnerabilities in police custody arrangements and the measures in place to prevent detainees from escaping.

In Limuru, the reported confrontation also raises questions about the circumstances under which the detainees were being transferred and the response by officers when the situation deteriorated.
Police face pressure to trace escapees
The latest escape adds to concerns over the ability of law enforcement agencies to maintain secure custody of suspects awaiting prosecution.
The five Limuru escapees were facing robbery with violence charges, although the charges remain allegations and do not amount to convictions.
The DCI deployment signals an intensified effort to locate the suspects and establish the circumstances surrounding their escape.
Police had not, in the information available at the time of publication, announced any arrests arising from the Limuru incident.
The search for the five suspects was ongoing as authorities worked to establish their whereabouts.
