Nigeria confirms Ebola case in Abuja after woman travels from Uganda
Health authorities in Nigeria have confirmed an Ebola case in Abuja and begun tracing people who may have come into contact with the patient.

ABUJA, Nigeria — Nigeria has confirmed an Ebola virus disease case in its capital, Abuja, after laboratory tests detected the infection in a woman who travelled from Uganda following a business trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The confirmation, announced on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, marks a significant development in the ongoing regional outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which has spread beyond the DRC and prompted heightened surveillance across several African countries.

Nigeria’s Health Minister, Muhammad Ali Pate, said the patient had been admitted to a private hospital in Abuja, where she received treatment for several days before laboratory tests confirmed the infection.

“She is in isolation, and she is receiving quality medical care,” Pate said.

Authorities have identified 44 people who had contact with the patient and begun tracing them as part of efforts to prevent further transmission.

The Nigerian government has not established that the woman contracted the virus in Uganda. Her travel history has instead raised questions about where she was exposed and whether other people may have been exposed before her diagnosis.

Uganda says patient transited through country without symptoms

Uganda’s Ministry of Health said the woman had travelled to eastern DRC for business before transiting through Uganda in early October.

According to the ministry, she was not displaying symptoms while in Uganda but developed them after arriving in Nigeria.

The ministry said Uganda had no confirmed active Ebola cases at the time of its statement, reiterating that the country had been declared free of the virus following its earlier outbreak.

Uganda recorded 20 Ebola cases during the outbreak in May and June 2026, with infections largely linked to the outbreak in neighbouring DRC. The World Health Organization (WHO) subsequently confirmed that the Ugandan outbreak had ended in August.

The latest Nigerian case therefore raises fresh concerns about the movement of people across borders during an outbreak, but does not establish that transmission occurred in Uganda.

The precise location of the woman’s exposure remains a critical question for public health investigators.

Nigeria launches contact tracing after confirmation

The Nigerian authorities are working to identify and monitor people who may have come into contact with the patient.

Pate said 44 contacts had been identified, with contact tracing already under way.

The investigation is expected to establish the patient’s movements, identify potential exposure points and determine whether anyone else may have contracted the virus.

The timing of symptom onset and the period before diagnosis are particularly important because Ebola can spread through direct contact with the blood or other bodily fluids of an infected person who is symptomatic, or with contaminated materials.

The virus does not ordinarily spread through the air in the way that influenza or measles does.

Nigeria has previous experience responding to Ebola. In 2014, the country contained an outbreak that began after an infected traveller arrived in Lagos, with rapid identification of contacts and coordinated public health measures playing a central role.

That experience provides a foundation for the current response, although the effectiveness of the containment effort will depend on early detection, accurate contact tracing, infection prevention in healthcare facilities and cooperation from affected communities.

Ebola outbreak in DRC continues to threaten the region

The case in Nigeria comes as the DRC continues to battle a major outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus, a member of the Ebola virus group.

The outbreak was declared in May 2026 and has spread across multiple provinces in the DRC, placing pressure on health facilities and disease surveillance systems.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported 8,728 confirmed cases and 4,205 deaths in the DRC as of October 6, highlighting the scale of the emergency. Subsequent reporting indicated that confirmed infections had exceeded 9,000.

Bundibugyo is a distinct Ebola virus species. There is no approved vaccine or specific treatment for the disease caused by this strain, making early detection, supportive medical care and effective infection control especially important.

The outbreak has also demonstrated how infections can cross national borders through travel and family or business connections.

Uganda previously reported infections linked to the outbreak but was declared Ebola-free in August. Kenya subsequently confirmed an imported case involving a traveller from the DRC who passed through Uganda before arriving in Nairobi.

Kenya has since reported additional infections linked to the initial case, with the World Health Organization confirming three cases, including one death, by October 16. Later reporting put Kenya’s total at nine confirmed cases.

The confirmation in Nigeria extends the outbreak’s geographical reach and reinforces the importance of coordination between national health authorities.

What the case means for regional surveillance

Nigeria’s confirmation places renewed emphasis on cross-border surveillance, particularly for travellers arriving from areas affected by Ebola.

Health authorities must establish where the patient was infected, reconstruct her travel history and determine whether any contacts require monitoring or further assessment.

The investigation also highlights the distinction between a country being declared free of an outbreak and the possibility of an infected traveller passing through its territory without symptoms.

A person may be incubating the virus before becoming ill. Ebola symptoms can appear between two and 21 days after exposure, meaning travel history and symptom onset are essential elements of an epidemiological investigation.

The confirmation does not, on its own, establish that Nigeria is experiencing sustained community transmission. That assessment will depend on the results of contact tracing and whether additional infections are identified.

For now, Nigerian authorities face the immediate task of containing the infection, protecting healthcare workers and preventing further spread.

Across the region, the latest development is a reminder that outbreaks originating in one country can quickly become a wider public health challenge when people move between affected areas and major travel hubs.
