KAMPALA, Uganda — President Yoweri Museveni has announced that the national football team, the Uganda Cranes, will receive a substantial bonus of UGX 1.2 billion (approximately KSh 43 million) for every match they win at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The message was delivered to the players by Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, who was delegated by the President to convey his commitment. Uganda is set to face Algeria tonight at 8 PM at Namboole Stadium.

The announcement comes as Uganda joins Kenya and Tanzania in co-hosting the prestigious tournament, which kicked off over the weekend.

Government officials have described the Uganda Cranes bonus at CHAN 2024 as a bold step to motivate the players and raise national pride through strong performances on home soil and across the East African region.

According to sources within the Ministry of Education and Sports, the incentive package was discussed and approved by high-level government officials, with the aim of creating a competitive atmosphere and supporting the team’s pursuit of regional football glory.

The announcement was confirmed by FUFA via their social media platforms today, Monday, April 8, 2025.

“The President has announced a massive winning bonus of 1.2 billion shillings per match for the team at CHAN 2024,” the statement partly received.

The pledge was announced to the players by FUFA President Moses Hassim Magogo at the national team camp located at FUFA Hotel.

The Uganda Cranes are looking to make a deep run in CHAN 2024, with high hopes of progressing past the group stages. The tournament exclusively features players who compete in their country’s domestic leagues, offering a platform to showcase local talent.

Uganda’s group includes Algeria, Namibia, and Ethiopia—teams considered strong opponents.

However, with financial and patriotic backing, the Cranes are expected to deliver spirited performances throughout the month-long tournament.

The incentive follows similar moves by other co-host nations, including Kenya, whose president, William Ruto, promised KSh 1 million per player for every win, along with a KSh 600 million jackpot if the Harambee Stars lift the trophy.

Uganda’s next match will be a critical test of the team’s preparedness and resolve, as they seek not only points and progression but also the pride—and now, the purse—of a winning start.

The tournament opener featured Tanzania defeating Burkina Faso 2-0, while Kenya triumphed 1-0 over the Democratic Republic of Congo; Uganda will kick off its campaign against Algeria.
