Harambee Stars to pocket Ksh 1m each from President Ruto after 1-0 win over DR Congo
President William Ruto, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, and among other leaders joined thousands of Kenyans at Nairobi's Kasarani Stadium to cheer on Harambee Stars.

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Harambee Stars kicked off their CHAN 2024 campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the DR Congo on Sunday, August 3, at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. The win not only secured three crucial points but also triggered a generous financial reward from President William Ruto, with each player set to receive Ksh 1 million.

This significant payout is part of a substantial bonus package promised by President Ruto during a motivational visit to the team’s camp before the tournament.

In a moment shared with team captain Aboud Omar, the President dangled the ultimate prize, saying: “You win CHAN, you get Ksh 600 million.”

He further pledged Ksh 1 million to each member of the delegation for every match won and KSh 500,000 for a draw.

The stakes are set to rise, with a promised KSh 60 million for reaching the quarterfinals and an additional KSh 70 million for a semifinal berth.

President William Ruto, who made a surprise visit to the players in the locker room after the match, announced the hefty bonus, instructing Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed to collect the funds on behalf of the team.

“Na si sasa kila mtu ako na milioni moja,” Ruto said to the visibly elated players. “Kesho asubuhi, Hussein, nipitie pale State House uchukue mali ya hawa vijana.”

The Head of State commended the team for their discipline and performance, singling out Austin Odhiambo, whose first-half strike sealed the win for Kenya.

“You did very well,” Ruto said. “Thank you Bwana Austin kwa kutupea bao la kipekee.”

His precise left-footed finish found the bottom corner of the net, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.

In the second half, goalkeeper Byrne Omondi was equally stellar, making a crucial save in the 67th minute to deny DR Congo a clear equalizer and anchor the team’s resilience.

The victory has provided an instant morale and financial boost to the team. Under coach Benni McCarthy, the Harambee Stars displayed unity, discipline, and flair to outclass their opponents.

Looking ahead, the team will face Angola in their next group match. The win has ignited momentum and brought the ultimate KSh 600 million jackpot for lifting the trophy one step closer.
