Activist Boniface Mwangi is Kenya’s most famous provocateur; at least in the eyes of the political elite.

NAIROBI, Kenya — Prominent Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi was apprehended on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at his residence in Lukenya, Machakos County. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed his arrest, stating it was in connection with the facilitation of terrorist activities during the June 25, 2025 protests.

In an official statement released on Sunday, July 20, 2025, the DCI detailed items recovered during Mwangi’s arrest and subsequent search of his office.

“Boniface Mwangi was arrested yesterday, July 19, 2025, by detectives at his residence in Lukenya in Machakos County in connection with the facilitation of terrorist activities during the June 25, 2025, protests,” the DCI stated.
