Maasai Mara enters World Book of Records for hosting largest terrestrial wildlife migration

NAROK, Kenya — Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano has officially lauded the inclusion of Kenya’s iconic Maasai Mara National Reserve in the World Book of Records, UK. The prestigious recognition designates the reserve as the site of the “World’s Greatest Annual Terrestrial Wildlife Migration,” marking a significant achievement for Kenya’s tourism and conservation sectors.

In a statement released on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, CS Miano highlighted this acknowledgment as a historic milestone for the country, expressing immense national pride and particular joy for the tourism sector.

She attributed this success to the leadership of President William Ruto, whom she referred to as Tourism Ambassador 001, acknowledging his pivotal role in promoting Kenya as a premier global tourism destination.

“Through the able leadership of Tourism Ambassador 001 William Ruto, I am thrilled to announce the official inclusion of the Maasai Mara National Reserve in the World Book of Records, UK, as the site of the ‘World’s Greatest Annual Terrestrial Wildlife Migration’. This recognition is a historic milestone for Kenya’s tourism and conservation sector and a moment of immense pride for our nation,” Miano said.

Miano described the Maasai Mara as a true natural wonder, emphasizing its role as host to over 1.5 million wildebeest, zebras, and antelopes that undertake their annual migration across the vast Serengeti-Mara ecosystem.

The Maasai Mara National Reserve has earned global recognition after being officially inscribed into the World Book of Records for hosting the largest annual terrestrial wildlife migration on earth.

She characterized the Great Migration not merely as a breathtaking spectacle but also as a powerful symbol of ecological balance, natural resilience, and the intricate interdependence of nature.

Narok County government lauded for conservation efforts

The Cabinet Secretary extended her heartfelt gratitude to the Narok County government and the local communities for their unwavering dedication to conservation and their instrumental role in preserving the integrity of the Maasai Mara.

She noted that their collective commitment has been crucial in maintaining the reserve as one of the most vital wildlife corridors on the planet.

“I also commend the Narok County Government and the local communities whose dedication and stewardship have been instrumental in preserving the integrity of this globally treasured landscape. Your efforts have ensured that the Maasai Mara remains one of the planet’s most vital wildlife corridors,” Miano added.

Win for Kenya as Maasai Mara gets unique recognition.

CS Miano also expressed appreciation to both local and international tourists whose continued patronage makes the Maasai Mara a preferred destination.

She acknowledged that their appreciation of the reserve serves as a strong motivation for the Ministry to enhance the protection and promotion of Kenya’s invaluable natural heritage.

Furthermore, Miano affirmed that this global recognition significantly strengthens Kenya’s standing as a leading sustainable tourism destination. It also reinforces the government’s steadfast commitment to conservation-driven tourism.

She concluded by stating that the Ministry of Tourism will continue to collaborate with partners to promote, protect, and invest in Kenya’s exceptional wildlife and natural resources.

Miano concluded her statement by declaring that this international recognition is not only a triumph for Kenya but also a victory for the entire planet, as it powerfully underscores the importance of safeguarding and valuing nature’s most extraordinary phenomena.
