Esau was arrested from his home without incident.

KANUNGU, Uganda — Security forces in Kanungu district have apprehended a man following the circulation of a video where he declared his intent to overthrow President Yoweri Museveni.

The individual, who identified himself solely as Esau, is estimated to be in his late 40s and resides in Kamutungu village, Nyakatunguru ward, Kihihi town council.

On Sunday, May 25th, Esau released a 3-minute, 39-second video, seemingly recorded within a forested area. Dressed in a civilian t-shirt, camouflage trousers, and desert tan jungle boots, and brandishing a machete, he announced the commencement of a campaign to remove the long-standing President from office.

“The time for change has come whether people want it or not,” he stated, urging Ugandan citizens to remain vigilant for an official declaration “within 48 hours.”

In his address, Esau asserted that his actions were not motivated by animosity or political aspirations, instead accusing President Museveni of impeding progress within Uganda. He issued a warning to the President and other political figures to “stay alert,” forecasting that Uganda and the global community would soon witness extraordinary events.

On Monday, a combined task force comprised of Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) personnel and police officers conducted an operation at Esau’s residence, resulting in his peaceful arrest.

During the apprehension, eyewitnesses report that he recited passages from the Bible, specifically Genesis 27, a chapter often associated with conflict, deception, and the pursuit of blessings.

Gaddie Rugaaju Ahimbisibwe, the deputy resident district commissioner of Kanungu, verified the arrest. Esau is currently being held at the Kihihi police station for questioning.

While authorities have not disclosed the precise charges under consideration, it is anticipated that he may face prosecution under statutes related to incitement, threats of violence, or terrorism-related offenses.
