KAMPALA, UGANDA — Edwin Nasasira, recovering in hospital from recent gunshot wounds to his hip and thigh, has issued a compelling call for immediate and comprehensive measures to address the pervasive “misuse” of firearms in Uganda.

Mr. Nasasira sustained his injuries after being shot by an unidentified individual at a bar in Kirinya, Bweyogerere.

From his hospital bed, he is now urging his representative in Parliament to initiate a critical discussion on the escalating problem of gun violence and the irresponsible handling of firearms.

Edwin Nasasira, who was recently shot in the hip and thigh, has called for immediate action to address the “misuse” of firearms in the country.

“I am reaching out to you, as my representative in Parliament, to urge you to table a discussion on the growing misuse of guns in our country,” Mr. Nasasira stated in a message shared on X (formerly Twitter).

The incident that left Mr. Nasasira injured reportedly occurred on March 22, 2025, when an unknown assailant fired recklessly into a public gathering, resulting in injuries to several other individuals as well.

He described the event as a deeply “traumatic” experience that has caused him both physical pain and significant emotional distress.

Despite his ongoing recovery, Mr. Nasasira remains resolute in his commitment to speaking out against the misuse of guns, imploring authorities, particularly Members of Parliament, to take decisive action to address this critical issue.

“No one should have to endure the fear and pain of gun violence, yet it is a reality for too many of us. My story is not just mine it reflects a broader issue that threatens the safety and well being of our communities,” he asserted. “The fact that we were attacked by someone whose identity remains unknown underscores the urgent need for stronger measures to control the illegal use and circulation of firearms in our country Uganda.”

Mr. Nasasira has specifically requested that his local MP bring his personal experience to the attention of Parliament, expressing his hope that it will receive the serious consideration he believes it urgently deserves.

He advocated for the development and implementation of robust policies that tackle the fundamental causes of gun violence, ensure stricter enforcement of existing firearms regulations, and ultimately protect innocent citizens from such senseless and devastating acts.

Mr. Nasasira believes that raising public awareness about the profound impact of gun misuse can serve as a vital catalyst for initiating the necessary changes to prevent others from enduring similar suffering.

“I trust in your commitment to serve and protect the people of this country. Please let my experience be a call to action for a safer future for all of us,” he concluded.
