EPRA hikes petrol prices

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) on Saturday, June 14, 2025, released new fuel prices for the upcoming month, indicating an increase in the cost of super petrol while announcing a decrease for both diesel and kerosene.

According to EPRA’s statement, the price of super petrol has risen by Ksh 2.69 per litre. Conversely, diesel will see a decrease of Ksh1.95 per litre, and kerosene will drop by Ksh 2.06 per litre. With these adjustments, super petrol will now retail at Ksh 177.32, diesel at Ksh 162.91, and kerosene at Ksh 146.93 per litre in Nairobi.

These calculated maximum retail prices for petroleum products are set to remain in effect from Saturday, June 15, to Monday, July 14, 2025.

EPRA clarified the methodology behind the new rates: “In accordance with Section 101(y) of the Petroleum Act 2019 and Legal Notice No.192 of 2022, we have calculated the maximum retail prices of petroleum products which will be in force from June 15 to July 14.”

The authority further stated: “The prices are inclusive of the 16% Value Added Tax (VAT) in line with the provisions of the Finance Act 2023, the Tax Laws (Amendment) Act 2024, and the revised rates for excise duty adjusted for inflation as per Legal Notice No. 194 of 2020.”

Regional variations in pricing were also detailed. In Mombasa, super petrol will retail at Ksh 174.01, diesel at Ksh 159.62, and kerosene at Ksh 143.64 per litre. Kisumu residents will pay Ksh 177.28 for super petrol, Ksh163.23 for diesel, and Ksh 147.30 for kerosene per litre.

In Nakuru, super petrol will be Ksh 176.47 per litre, with diesel at Ksh 162.41 and kerosene at Ksh 146.47 per litre. Lastly, Eldoret will see super petrol at Ksh 177.28, diesel at Ksh 163.24, and kerosene at Ksh 147.30 per litre.

EPRA attributed the changes to global market trends, noting that the average landed cost of imported super petrol increased by 0.35 percent, from US$588.16 (Ksh 76,166) per cubic metre in April 2025 to US$590.24 (Ksh 76,436) in May 2025.

Conversely, the agency reported that the cost of diesel decreased by 2.42 percent, from US$594.60 (Ksh 77,000) per cubic metre to US$580.23 (Ksh 75,139), while kerosene saw a 5.14 percent decrease, from US$599.84 (Ksh 77,679) to US$569.00 (Ksh 73,685) per cubic metre over the same period.

EPRA explained that Kenya’s reliance on imported petroleum means domestic fuel prices are directly influenced by these international market dynamics.
