Petrol, diesel and kerosene prices in Kenya increase after latest EPRA review

NAIROBI, Kenya — Consumers across Kenya are bracing for increased living costs as the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced a substantial upward revision of fuel prices.

Effective from July 15 to August 14, super petrol, diesel, and kerosene will see significant price jumps of Ksh 8.99, Ksh 8.67, and Ksh 9.65 per litre, respectively.

In Nairobi, a litre of super petrol will now retail at Ksh 186.31, while diesel will be sold at Ksh 171.58. Kerosene, a vital commodity for many households, will cost Ksh 156.58 per litre in the capital.

Residents of Mombasa will observe new prices of Ksh 183.02 for super petrol, Ksh 168.30 for diesel, and Ksh 153.29 for kerosene. Meanwhile, in Kisumu, consumers will pay Ksh 186.15 for super petrol, Ksh 171.78 for diesel, and Ksh 156.83 for kerosene.

EPRA Director-General Daniel Bargoria attributed the price hikes to rising global costs of imported petroleum products.

“The average landed cost of imported super petrol increased by 6.45% from US590.24 per cubicmetre in May 2025 to US 628.30 per cubic metre in June 2025; diesel increased by 6.27% from US580.23 per cubic metre to US 616.59 per cubic metre while kerosene increased by 6.95% from US 569.00per cubic metre to US 608.54 per cubic metre over the same period,” Bargoria stated.

The review highlights the continued volatility in international energy markets, directly impacting a country like Kenya that relies entirely on imported refined petroleum products.

These new prices, which include the 16% Value Added Tax (VAT) and adjusted excise duty rates, are expected to exert further pressure on household budgets and operational costs for businesses across the nation.
