Former Kenya’s Deputy President Gachagua unveils DCP party to unseat Ruto in 2027
Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) - officially registered on February 3, 2025, with the Registrar of Political Parties - was unveiled on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at the party headquarters in Lavington, Nairobi.

NAIROBI, KENYA — Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) is scheduled for its official public launch on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at the Kasarani Indoor Arena in Nairobi.

The launch date was communicated in a booking letter dated May 20, 2025, from the party’s Secretary General, Hezron Obaga, to the management of the Kasarani facility.

According to Mr. Obaga’s correspondence, the DCP anticipates an attendance of at least 5,000 individuals, including party members, supporters, and invited guests. The event is planned to run from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

“We plan to use the facility for speeches, interactive sessions and performances aimed at unveiling our vision, manifesto and leadership to the Kenyan public,” the party SG stated in the letter.

The letter also included a formal inquiry about the venue’s availability, booking procedures, associated costs, and requirements.

In response, the management of the Kasarani Indoor Arena has quoted the DCP a fee of Ksh.3.7 million for the gymnasium’s hire for the party’s launch event.

This official launch follows the initial unveiling of the DCP, which occurred on May 15, 2025, at the party’s headquarters situated in Lavington, Nairobi. The initial event offered the public a preliminary look at the party’s identity and leadership, although the proceedings were briefly disrupted by unruly elements, necessitating the intervention of security personnel.

During the Lavington unveiling, Gachagua emphasized the DCP’s commitment to actively listen to the concerns of Kenyans, a principle visually represented in the party’s logo depicting a hand cupped beneath an ear and reinforced by their slogan, “Skiza Wakenya (Listen to Kenyans).”

The former Deputy President stated that the formation of the DCP was driven by the need to provide Kenyans with more effective leadership and address the persistent issues of poor governance.

“Kenyans have boldly told us they have a solution to the problems facing them. Kenyans have asked us to start a party which will form a government by the people for the people,” he remarked at the time.

The interim leadership of the DCP includes former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala as the interim Deputy Party leader and David Mingati as the Chairperson.

Several other prominent politicians have been assigned key roles within the nascent party, including former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi as the National Organizing Secretary, former Laikipia Woman Representative Cate Waruguru as the National Women’s Leader, and former Limuru MP Peter Mwathi as the Deputy Party chair of strategy.

The remaining key officials are Hezron Obaga (Secretary General), Hannah Mutua (Treasurer), Andrew Kiplimo Muge (Director of Elections), Maina Kamanda (Chairperson of the Council of Eminent Persons), and Alex Khamasi (National Coordinator-Counties).
