UPDF soldiers, civilians nabbed in Kasangati night robbery crackdown

WAKISO, UGANDA — Two Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) soldiers and two civilians have been apprehended on suspicion of orchestrating a series of night robberies within Kasangati town council, located in Wakiso district.

The arrested individuals include Pte Moses Mutebi, attached to the 73 Battalion under the 5th Division, and another soldier identified as Pte Mulumba, who is attached to Makindye barracks. The two civilians are Emmanuel Muyingo, a resident of Busiika, and Ezekiel Wandera, a resident of Bamba Cell, Kasangati town council.

Their arrest was the result of an intelligence-driven operation executed in the Kiteezi Cell area by a joint security team spearheaded by ASP Charles Twinemukama, with support from the UPDF under the command of Maj Lubwama.

Security sources indicate that the operation was launched following credible intelligence regarding a civilian frequently observed wearing a UPDF uniform during nighttime hours and traveling in a black Subaru vehicle bearing registration number UBK 813A. This operation led to the apprehension of three suspects and the recovery of the aforementioned vehicle.

Exhibits recovered during the operation include one UPDF jacket, four women’s dresses, two pairs of women’s shoes, one pair of children’s shoes, and other unspecified items.

Security sources further allege that the suspects were seen donning army uniforms during their nocturnal activities, primarily in the areas of Kiteezi, Busiika, Buwambo, Matugga, Makindye, and various other parts of Kampala.

Pte Mulumba, suspected of playing a significant role in facilitating the robberies, has been handed over to the UPDF and received by RA 218243 CPL Herbert Twinobusingye of Kasangati Army Barracks.

The impounded Subaru vehicle is currently in police custody at Kiteezi police station.

Police have filed charges against the civilian suspects related to the unlawful possession of government stores.
