NAIROBI, Kenya — Startling new evidence has emerged in the investigation into the death of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, after Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) homicide detectives reviewed critical CCTV footage from the Eagol Petrol Station in Naivasha.
The visual evidence appears to dismantle earlier testimony provided by the driver of the Climax Coach bus involved in the head-on collision that occurred at approximately 2:19 AM on December 13, 2025.
The bus driver had previously alleged that Jirongo was attempting to overtake multiple vehicles in heavy traffic moments before the impact. However, the 45-second CCTV clip reveals a remarkably clear road with no signs of the reported congestion.
The footage shows Jirongo’s white Mercedes-Benz E350 entering the station and making a U-turn back toward Nairobi, without refuelling, just six seconds before the fatal crash.
Adding a chilling dimension to the probe, security experts have flagged a “mysterious vehicle” captured entering the petrol station immediately after Jirongo. There are growing suspicions that this second vehicle may have been tailing the former Cabinet Minister throughout his journey from Nairobi to Naivasha.
The DCI’s initial reconstruction of Jirongo’s final hours is also facing intense scrutiny. While investigators originally placed Jirongo at the Park Place Hotel in Nairobi late that night, the hotel’s management has officially denied he was on the premises.
This denial is backed by former Vihiga Senator George Khaniri, who maintains that Jirongo never set foot at Park Place that evening. Khaniri instead noted that he last spoke with Jirongo at approximately 11:00 PM, at which point the former MP was at the Oasis Entertainment Joint in Karen with Speaker Moses Wetang’ula.
The inconsistencies between the bus driver’s account, the DCI’s initial timeline, and the new visual evidence have led the Jirongo family to demand a “thorough, forensic unravelling” of the mystery.

“There have been many questions and glaring gaps surrounding the death of our brother, and we have consistently said we want answers,” stated Khaniri during a recent address at the Lee Funeral Home.
“The wreckage of his vehicle and the injuries sustained do not add up. We must wait for the full report so that the many questions raised can be properly addressed,” Khaniri added.
As the DCI continues to piece together the forensic trail, the presence of the “mystery vehicle” remains the most critical unanswered question in a case that has captivated the nation’s political landscape.
