NAIROBI, Kenya — The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has officially announced the commencement of a comprehensive inquiry into the death of former Cabinet Minister and ex-Lugari Member of Parliament, Cyrus Jirongo.
The politician succumbed to injuries sustained in a fatal road traffic accident on the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway in the early hours of Saturday, December 13, 2025.
In a statement released Monday, the DCI confirmed the crash occurred around 2:19 a.m. at the Karai area in Naivasha. The collision involved Jirongo’s vehicle, registered as KCZ 350C, and a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) bus belonging to Climax Company Ltd, registration number KCU 576A.
Preliminary findings describe a forceful, head-on collision. The severity of the impact propelled Jirongo’s vehicle approximately 25 meters from the point of collision, while the bus came to rest about 50 meters away.

In response, the DCI deployed a specialized, multi-agency team consisting of homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory. The team secured the scene and key exhibits as part of their mandate to establish the precise circumstances surrounding the fatality.
“In line with its mandate, the DCI deployed a combined team of homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory, who visited the scene, conducted preliminary examinations, and secured key exhibits,” the statement signed by J. Kmarete on behalf of the DCI boss reads.
CCTV Footage and final moments
A critical development in the investigation is the recovery and analysis of CCTV footage from the Eagol Petrol Station, situated near the accident scene. Investigators report that the footage provides a minute-by-minute timeline of the former Minister’s final movements before the crash.
The footage establishes the following sequence of events:
- 2:18:40 a.m.: Jirongo drives into the petrol station, arriving from the Nairobi direction, but does not refuel.
- 2:19:10 a.m.: His vehicle pauses briefly at the station’s exit.
- 2:19:19 a.m.: Jirongo makes a right turn, moving back onto the highway towards the Nairobi direction.
- 2:19:25 a.m.: Just six seconds after re-entering the highway, the PSV bus rams into his vehicle.
Detectives have since interrogated the driver of the PSV bus, identified as Tyrus Kamau Githinji, who had previously recorded a statement at the Naivasha Traffic Base. The driver has been released on cash bail as investigations continue into the potential offence of causing death by dangerous driving.
“He is required to report to the Naivasha Traffic Base on 22nd December 2025 for further police action,” Marete said.
Furthermore, the night guard and fuel attendant at the petrol station have provided firsthand accounts to investigators.
The DCI confirms that investigations are ongoing. The forensic team is scheduled to revisit the scene for deeper analysis, and detectives are actively tracing Jirongo’s movements in the hours leading up to the crash.
