NEW YORK, United States — EGOT winner Whoopi Goldberg is celebrating a major family milestone after announcing the birth of her second great-grandchild. The 70-year-old actress and television host shared the exciting news during the Monday, December 8, broadcast of The View.
The beloved co-host revealed that her grandson, Mason Dean, and his girlfriend welcomed a baby girl over the weekend, whom they have named Lotus.
Goldberg opened the show with the personal news, sharing the infant’s first details and photos with the audience: “I’m going to start out today because I have some fun news from over the weekend. My family welcomed Lotus Dean to the world. She’s 6lbs., 3oz.,” Goldberg stated as images of the newborn flashed on the screen.
She continued, pointing out the pictures: “That’s Lotus and Ruby [the dog],” adding, “She is, that’s her dad — my grandson, Mason.”
When co-host Sunny Hostin commented that Mason looked smitten, saying “He looks in love,” Goldberg responded with a trademark joke: “Yeah, that’ll change.” She quickly grew serious, reflecting on the moment: “It’s a wonderful thing. It’s a wonderful thing. This is my second.”
Family lineage
Mason, 27, is the son of Goldberg’s only child, daughter Alex Martin. Alex, 51, shares Mason, along with daughters Amara, 36, and Jersey, 29, with her husband, Bernard Dean.
The family congratulations extended across the table, with co-host Ana Navarro acknowledging the proud generation above Whoopi: “And congratulations to Alex, who is a grandmother again,” Navarro said.
Goldberg, already focused on her unique role, added, “I don’t think about that, I simply think about myself. Cause I never thought I’d have two great-grandkids. To be there for that.”
Goldberg first achieved great-grandmother status in 2014 when her granddaughter Amara welcomed her daughter, Charli Rose.

When asked by her co-hosts how the great-grandkids refer to her, Goldberg clarified her title: “They call me Whoopi — cause I’m not the grandma! I’m the great grandma! So just Whoopi.”
She shared a sweet anecdote about her first great-grandchild’s struggles with her name: “She couldn’t say her Ws, so I was ‘Oopi’ for the longest time. So we’ll see. But I think this one, she’s ready to get stuff done.”
The announcement wrapped up a fun segment, leaving fans of The View with news of the star’s expanding family, just weeks after Goldberg addressed her thoughts on retirement in a September interview.
