    Nigerian army officer dies after wife allegedly sets him on fire months after lavish wedding

    Lieutenant Samson Haruna, Nigerian Army officer, died after reportedly being set on fire by his wife in Akwa Ibom State.

    IBAGWA, Nigeria — A Nigerian army officer, a medical doctor identified as Lieutenant Samson Haruna, has reportedly died after sustaining severe burns in an alleged domestic violence incident where he was set on fire by his wife.

    The incident occurred at the Wellington Bassey Barracks in Ibagwa, Akwa Ibom State, according to security analyst and counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama.

    The tragic event reportedly unfolded on September 22, 2025. Lieutenant Haruna had a heated argument with his wife, Mrs. Samson Haruna.

    A source quoted detailed the devastating escalation of the dispute: “The officer had a heated argument with his wife, Mrs Retyit Obadiah Dalong Samson Haruna, which resulted in her dousing him with petrol and setting him on fire.”

    Lieutenant Haruna was initially stabilized at the Military Reference Section (MRS) within the barracks before being transferred for specialized treatment.

    “The officer sustained severe burns and was immediately stabilized at the Military Reference Section (MRS) in the barracks before being evacuated to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital for further management,” the source added. He succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment on Tuesday, October 7.

    Army condemns the act and calls for calm

    In a statement released on Tuesday, October 7, the Uyo State Army Public Relations Assistant Director, Lawal Muhammad, condemned the officer’s killing and expressed sympathy for the bereaved family.

    As reported by Punch, the statement read: “The Nigerian Army strongly condemns this act of domestic violence, recognising the imperative of peaceful coexistence and respect within families. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family of Lieutenant Haruna.”

    The Army further committed to addressing such issues internally: “The Nigerian Army will continue to advocate healthy relationships, address domestic violence, and foster a culture of respect and dialogue within families and communities.”

    Finally, the military called for patience while the investigation proceeds: “The Nigerian Army is calling for all parties to remain calm while awaiting the outcome of the military police investigation,” the statement concluded.
