KAMPALA, Uganda — Ugandan security forces have successfully neutralized a second female suicide bomber in Kampala, averting a potentially devastating attack in a densely populated area.

According to an official tweet posted by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), the suspect was intercepted and neutralized at Kalerwe Market, situated on the northern edge of the capital.

The UPDF confirmed that its “bomb squad” promptly arrived on the scene and is “conducting investigations” while actively securing the area.

A photograph released alongside the statement depicts the suspect lying motionless on the ground, adjacent to a motorcycle and a black travel bag, which authorities believe contained explosive materials.

This photo posted by the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) on their X platform shows the body of the suspected female suicide bomber at Kalerwe market in Uganda’s capital, Kampala, on June 22, 2025.

This incident follows closely on the heels of another foiled suicide attack just weeks prior in Munyonyo.

In that instance, a suspected terrorist, wearing a suicide vest, was intercepted by a UPDF counter-terrorism unit as they attempted to approach the Munyonyo Basilica—a significant pilgrimage site for Uganda Martyrs Day.

The recurrence of a female suicide bomber, particularly in close proximity to Martyrs Day, suggests the potential for a broader, coordinated scheme by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) or allied cells to launch simultaneous assaults in crowded urban centers.

While investigations are ongoing, authorities have yet to confirm a direct connection between the two incidents.

In response to these threats, security forces have significantly intensified deployments across the capital.

Heightened surveillance and increased checkpoints are now visible near key public spaces and places of worship, underscoring the vigilance of Ugandan authorities in safeguarding the city.
