NAIROBI, Kenya — The Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, has ordered the interdiction of all police officers who were on duty at the Central Police Station on Sunday, June 8, 2025, when Albert Ojwang’ tragically died while in custody.
The National Police Service (NPS) announced on Monday that this decisive action facilitates an impartial investigation into the incident by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).
The interdicted officers include the Officer Commanding Station (OCS), the Duty Officer on duty during the night in question, the Cell Sentry, all officers assigned to the Report Office that night, and any other personnel found to have been on duty or involved in the incident.
This measure, according to police, will enable a “thorough, impartial, and expeditious investigation” by IPOA.
Albert Ojwang’ died at the Central Police Station in Nairobi on Sunday. His death occurred after his arrest on Saturday afternoon at his home in Kakot, Homa Bay County.

Police had reportedly apprehended him in connection with a post he allegedly made on the social media platform X.
He was subsequently transported to Nairobi and detained at the Central Police Station.
Upon arriving at the police station on Sunday to follow up on his case, Ojwang’s family was informed of his death.
“We awaited his arraignment in court on Monday so we can follow up the case from there. But today, his father who came to follow up after the arrest informed me his son was dead. It is quite unfortunate,” a lawyer for the family told reporters outside the police station.
The family was informed that Albert’s body had been transferred to the City Mortuary.
