Uganda Airlines launches direct flight to London Gatwick in push to boost tourism and investment
Uganda Airlines launches direct flights from Entebbe to London Gatwick, marking a milestone for the airline and aiming to boost trade, tourism, and ties between Uganda and the UK.

ENTEBBE, UGANDA — A newly established direct flight connection between Entebbe and London Gatwick, inaugurated today by Uganda Airlines, is projected to significantly enhance both investment and tourism within Uganda, according to perspectives from government and industry authorities.

The inaugural flight departed from Entebbe International Airport Sunday 18, May 2025 morning, creating a direct link with a primary aviation hub in the United Kingdom (UK).

This service, operating four times weekly utilizing Uganda Airlines’ modern Airbus A330-800neo aircraft, is expected to simplify travel logistics and cultivate stronger economic relationships between the two nations.

Government officials anticipate that the elimination of layovers will elevate Uganda’s appeal as a destination for both business and leisure travelers originating from the United Kingdom, a historically significant source market for Ugandan tourism.

The convenience of direct travel is expected to encourage a greater number of British tourists to explore Uganda’s well-known natural attractions, encompassing its diverse wildlife and the source of the Nile.

Hon. Gen. Katumba Wamala, the Minister of Works and Transport, underscored the anticipated influence on the tourism sector, stating, “The UK remains one of Uganda’s largest source markets for inbound tourism. This direct flight makes it more convenient than ever for British tourists to explore Uganda’s diverse natural attractions… We anticipate a strong boost in tourism arrivals and associated revenues.”

Beyond tourism, the direct air route is also expected to stimulate investment. The more rapid and efficient movement of individuals and goods facilitated by the non-stop service is perceived as a crucial factor in promoting increased business engagement between Uganda and the UK.

Data from the British High Commission indicates a robust existing trade relationship, and the new flight service is expected to further strengthen this.

Uganda Airlines CEO Jenifer Bamuturaki emphasized the strategic significance of the London-Gatwick route in connecting Uganda with a major global economic center. She also pointed out that the return flight schedules are designed to facilitate onward connections to key destinations within Uganda Airlines’ expanding African network, potentially attracting further business and investment into the region.

The deployment of the fuel-efficient Airbus A330-800neo highlights Uganda Airlines’ dedication to offering a contemporary and comfortable travel experience while also prioritizing sustainable operations. The airline takes pride in being the first to operate this aircraft model into London Gatwick.
