NAIROBI, KENYA — The Kenyan government has initiated a significant crackdown on betting companies in a determined effort to protect young people from the growing menace of gambling addiction.

This decisive action was announced by Internal Security and National Administration Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo just hours after the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) issued a directive mandating all television and radio stations to drastically reduce betting, lottery, and gambling-related content within a strict 14-day timeframe, warning of potential license revocation for non-compliance.

“Our people are hooked into betting, and we are focused on cleaning up this space,” asserted Dr. Omollo.

He further emphasized the government’s resolve, stating, “We are targeting rogue businessmen and women, and we call on the public to support security officers in bringing these individuals to book.”

Dr. Omollo revealed the personal commitment of President William Ruto to this crackdown, underscoring the gravity with which the government views the issue.

“Changes will be made to protect Kenyans trapped in betting addiction, which has left many in poverty. Some have even taken their own lives or turned to crime to fund their gambling habits,” he stated.

Dr. Omollo made these remarks during a Jukwaa la Usalama town hall meeting held in Machakos.

The Communications Authority’s directive the previous week instructed television and radio broadcasters to strictly adhere to limitations on betting-related content, cautioning that exceeding the approved quotas would lead to license suspension or outright withdrawal.

Dr. Omollo also reiterated the directive issued by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, calling for the swift apprehension and prosecution of politicians found to be luring unemployed youth into criminal gangs.
