MIGORI COUNTY, Kenya — Travel content creator Kieran Brown, known for documenting his journeys across the world, has described a night spent on Migingo Island in Lake Victoria as the worst hotel experience of his travels.
Brown, who says he has visited more than 157 countries, shared the experience during a recent podcast interview while reflecting on some of the most challenging places he has stayed during his global adventures.
Migingo Island, a tiny rocky outcrop in Lake Victoria, is best known for its thriving fishing industry and a long-running territorial dispute between Kenya and Uganda.
Despite its small size, the island supports a bustling fishing community and is regarded as one of the most densely populated settlements in the region.
Kieran Brown’s first impression of Migingo Island
Brown said he travelled to Migingo last year to film content for his YouTube channel and was struck by the island’s unusual geography and crowded conditions.
According to him, local residents appeared surprised to see him and his companion arrive, and they were required to obtain military clearance before being allowed to stay overnight.
“It is often referred to as the most crowded island on the planet. We got there, and it is literally just a rock in the middle of the lake. It’s probably about half the size of a football pitch, and it has over 500 people living there,” Brown said.
The travel creator said he eventually secured accommodation costing just one US dollar ($1 USD) per night.
However, he said the room offered little comfort.
“It was just a tin shack with a little single bed. I looked up at the ceiling, and there were around 100 mosquitoes with no net, no window and no air circulation.”

Brown also described the room as poorly ventilated and claimed he found used condoms under the bed.
“I don’t know how I stayed the night there, but I managed to. It’s one of those stories I’ll have for the rest of my life and be able to tell my grandchildren.”
He added that he currently has “no rush” to return to the island.
Why Migingo Island attracts attention
Although it occupies less than half a hectare, Migingo Island plays an outsized role in the Lake Victoria fishing economy.
The island sits near some of the lake’s richest fishing grounds and serves as a hub for the lucrative Nile perch trade, one of East Africa’s most valuable commercial fisheries.
Its economic importance has attracted hundreds of fishermen, traders and support workers, resulting in tightly packed structures built across nearly every available space.

The island has also attracted international attention over the years because of competing territorial claims by Kenya and Uganda, although both countries have largely maintained peaceful cooperation around fishing activities in the area.
Social Media reacts to Kieran Brown’s comments
Brown’s remarks quickly generated discussion online, with many viewers responding humorously to his account.
Some social media users joked that accommodation costing one dollar per night was unlikely to offer luxury standards.
Others poked fun at Brown’s expectations, while some playfully suggested that Migingo’s unique character and unusual population density make it unlike any other destination in East Africa.
Despite his criticism of the accommodation, Brown’s experience has once again drawn global attention to Migingo Island—a tiny but economically significant community whose unusual geography continues to fascinate travellers, researchers and content creators alike.
