DIANI, Kenya — Police in Diani, Kwale County, are proceeding with the deportation process for Elwin Ter Horst, a Dutch national, following a viral video that showed him verbally abusing and spitting on officers inside the Diani Police Station.
Horst was initially detained at the station on Tuesday evening for public intoxication.
During his detention, the video captured him shouting at officers and aggressively spitting and throwing mucus at a male police officer within the facility.
Before the viral incident, Horst was scheduled to be arraigned in court to face multiple charges, including assault, malicious damage to property, creating a disturbance, and possession of narcotics.
Authorities later established that the Dutch national was also staying in the country illegally, as his passport had expired.
Apology and condemnation
Robinson Langat, the Msambweni Police Commander, strongly condemned the abusive behavior, issuing a stern warning to foreign nationals: “who violate Kenyan laws that strict legal action will be taken against them.”

Horst has since apologized for his actions, expressing regret and a desire to remain in Kenya. He attributed his volatile behavior to stress, claiming it led to a loss of mental composure on the day of the incident.
Addressing the situation, the Dutch national, who identified himself as ‘Mufasa’, stated: “I had a psychosis; I need my medicine… I did not have water and food for a long time,” Horst further stated, identifying himself as ‘Mufasa’.
Despite his apology and claims of medical distress, the suspect has been formally arraigned at the Kwale Court, after which his deportation process is expected to continue.
