MERU, Kenya — Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has publicly expressed his solidarity with Kenyans who today donned face masks in a poignant tribute to Boniface Kariuki, a hawker reportedly shot at close range by Police Officer Kilinzy Barasa.

Gachagua made his remarks during a political rally in Meru, where he was accompanied by leaders from his “Democracy for the Citizen” party.

The widespread initiative to wear face masks was spearheaded by renowned comedian and activist Eric Omondi, who utilized his social media platforms to rally the nation.

Omondi’s call for unity stated: “I am calling upon Kenyans all over the country, this Friday let’s all wear masks in celebration of our brother Eli Joshua/Bonface Kariuki.”

The tribute witnessed broad participation across the country, with celebrities, students, companies, politicians, boda-boda riders, and Kenyans from all walks of life observing the day to celebrate and honour Boniface Kariuki.

Two officers accused in Nairobi protest shooting
Masinde Barasa and Duncan Kiprono, the two police officers accused of shooting a mask vendor during Tuesday’s protests in Nairobi CBD, were arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts on June 19, 2025.

Participation was noted from various counties nationwide, including Nairobi, Mombasa, Baringo, and Machakos, among others.

As part of the initiative, the “Sisi Kwa Sisi” chairman visited the scene where Boniface was shot and lay fighting for his life, and also distributed masks to individuals on the streets of Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).

Demonstrating further solidarity, Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti shared a picture of herself wearing a mask, underscoring her support for Kenyans honoring Boniface Kariuki.
