GULU, Uganda — Female soldiers within the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) have received a stern warning against violating dress codes and engaging in extravagant lifestyles.

Major General Felix Busizoori, the 4th Infantry Division Commander, asserted that the military profession is not for those seeking an easy life, emphasizing discipline and responsible living as paramount.

Speaking at the Division headquarters, Maj Gen Busizoori stressed that prioritizing lavish lifestyles, often referred to as the “soft life,” can lead to indiscipline and financial instability among female soldiers. He called upon all personnel to prioritize discipline and responsible living over the pursuit of extravagance.

The Commander further emphasized adherence to the UPDF Code of Conduct, specifically highlighting the regulation that prohibits female soldiers from marrying or starting families during their initial four years of service.

“Anyone who fails to comply risks facing prosecution and dismissal from the force. There is a growing habit among some female soldiers of plaiting long hair that falls on their backs. This violates the UPDF dress code, which has not changed. Such conduct undermines the image and professionalism of the force,” Maj Gen Busizoori stated.

This directive comes after several female soldiers, alongside police and prison officers, were observed marching with plaited hair during recent International Women’s Day and International Labour Day celebrations.

Maj Gen Busizoori urged female soldiers to uphold self-respect and embrace discipline as the cornerstone of their careers.

“Discipline is the key to success at any level. Ladies have always been seen as a centre of excellence. Respect yourselves, avoid alcoholism, refrain from body piercing, and maintain your natural beauty,” he advised.

Brigadier General Jackson Kayanja, the Deputy Commandant of the 4th Division, echoed these sentiments, reinforcing the call for appropriate dress and a focus on building legacies of honor and commitment.

Maj Gen Busizoori concluded his remarks by encouraging soldiers to make prudent choices: “Avoid anything that doesn’t add value to your salary or service. Responsible living will secure your future.”
