NAIROBI, Kenya — In a significant development in the investigation into the death of Albert Ojwang’ while in custody at the Central Police Station, Chief Government Pathologist Bernard Midia has revealed that Ojwang’ was assaulted and sustained multiple body injuries.
The findings, released after an autopsy conducted on Tuesday, directly contradict an earlier police report claiming Ojwang’ died from hitting his head against a cell wall.
Dr. Midia, addressing the media after the procedure, meticulously and vividly detailed the nature of Ojwang’s injuries, dismissing the self-inflicted theory.
“When we examined… the pattern of the injury, especially on the trauma I found on the head…. Hitting against a blunt substance like a wall would have a pattern,” he stated. He further explained that self-inflicted frontal bleeding would be typical in such a scenario.
However, the autopsy revealed a different picture. “But the bleeds that we found on the scalp…on the skin of the head were spaced, including on the face, sides of the head, and the back of the head,” Dr. Midia explained.
The pathologist, who performed the procedure alongside Mutuma Zambezi, the family’s representative, unequivocally ruled out the possibility of Ojwang’ injuring himself.

“When we tie up together with other injuries that are well spread on parts of the body… including the upper limbs and the trunk… Then this is unlikely to be self-inflicted injury,” Dr. Midia told the press on Tuesday.
These post-mortem findings directly contradict the police report from Sunday, which attributed Ojwang’s head injuries and death to him hitting his head repeatedly against the cell wall at Central Police Station.
The new revelations are expected to intensify calls for accountability and a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ojwang’s death.
