NAIROBI, KENYA — In the wake of the assassination of Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ong’ondo Were in Nairobi, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has directed all Members of Parliament (MPs) to submit their security details for a comprehensive vetting process.
During the late MP’s requiem mass at Consolata Shrine in Nairobi, Speaker Wetang’ula also instructed the Clerk of Parliament to compile and submit all relevant CCTV footage, detailing the late MP’s movements and activities within the parliamentary precincts from his arrival to his departure.
“In looking at the tragedy that befell our MP, we encourage the police not to narrow their investigations to matters around the City Mortuary,” he emphasized. “I have instructed the clerk of Parliament to put together all our CCTV footage in Parliament on the activities around Were from the time he arrived at the gym around 6:00 am to the time he left Parliament at 7:00 pm.”
Speaker Wetang’ula further called upon Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja to ensure the operational functionality of all CCTV cameras across the capital, operating on a 24-hour basis, to bolster citywide security.
He asserted that these measures would serve as a deterrent to potential perpetrators of criminal activities, thereby fostering a safer environment for the public.

“Going forward, I encourage each one of you to submit your security details for vetting for us to get to know what kind of security you have, Kikulacho kinguoni mwako. We will be able to assist in doing so,” Wetang’ula stated. “The Nairobi governor is here, we want to see that all CCTV cameras work optimally for 24 hours to capture wicked characters around the city.”
MP Were was fatally shot on April 30, 2025, while in traffic, by a gunman who was accompanied by an accomplice on a motorcycle. To date, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has apprehended six suspects in connection with the MP’s murder.
Detectives are continuing their pursuit of additional suspects, including a police officer believed to have been an integral part of the organized network responsible for the crime.
