Samwel Mogwasi Mainga appears in court on April 10, 2025, to face charges of identity theft and impersonation

NAIROBI, KENYA — A man has been formally charged with impersonating June Ruto, the daughter of President William Ruto.

Samwel Mogwasi Mainga was taken into custody on Wednesday 9, April 2025 in Mombasa on accusations of identity theft and impersonation, offenses that contravene Section 29 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Act 2018.

He appeared before the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi on Thursday 10, April 2025, where law enforcement officials requested an additional seven days of detention to facilitate the completion of their ongoing investigations.

Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer Peter Mwangi, in an affidavit submitted to the court, stated, “due to the nature and the complexity of this matter it requires more days to obtain some vital information/documents in relationship to the case.”

According to Officer Mwangi, investigators require further time to acquire documentation related to the suspect’s Facebook account, record statements from pertinent witnesses, and ensure that the suspect does not abscond from the court’s jurisdiction, as his permanent residence has yet to be verified.

The court is scheduled to deliver its ruling on the police application to extend Mainga’s detention on Friday 11, April 2025.
