UASIN GISHU, Kenya — Police officers in Uasin Gishu County were left stranded with a decomposed body at Kamukunji Police Station after three mortuaries reportedly declined to receive it due to lack of space.

The body, which was later moved following intervention by authorities, had been recovered from Mugoya Dam in Soy Sub-County.

The incident was reported on June 16 after a local herder grazing sheep spotted a body floating in the dam and alerted authorities.

Police officers and personnel from the Uasin Gishu County fire brigade responded to the scene, where they retrieved the body from the water.

Preliminary examination established that the deceased was an unidentified African male adult, estimated to be about 35 years old.

Police said the body had already begun decomposing at the time of recovery.

Crime scene investigators documented and photographed the scene before the remains were moved for further processing.

The body was temporarily held at Kamukunji Police Station as officers attempted to secure space at a mortuary.

However, police officials reported difficulties after three mortuaries declined to receive the remains, citing lack of storage capacity.
