KAMPALA, Uganda — Investigators have reportedly seized a mobile phone belonging to former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among during a security operation at her Nakasero residence, as part of an expanding corruption and illicit enrichment investigation.

Sources familiar with the inquiry said the device is expected to undergo detailed forensic analysis, with authorities seeking potential evidence linked to financial transactions, communications and other digital records.

Officials involved in the probe indicated that the phone could play a key role in ongoing investigations.

“The phone is now considered important evidence in the ongoing investigations,” one source said.

Investigators are expected to analyse call logs, messages, financial data and other digital material, including attempts to recover deleted information.

A source close to the process said forensic teams would focus on retrieving communication records, documents and transaction trails that may assist in building the case.

It remains unclear which specific agency is currently holding the device, with the operation understood to involve multiple security units, including criminal investigations and intelligence agencies.

The seizure follows a broader series of searches targeting properties linked to the former Speaker, as authorities widen the scope of the inquiry.

Security experts note that Uganda’s investigative agencies have, in recent years, strengthened their digital forensic capabilities, enabling them to extract and analyse data from electronic devices.

Such systems can retrieve deleted messages, files and other forms of digital evidence, making mobile devices a critical component in complex financial and corruption investigations.

The investigation gained momentum after Aisha Batala Nalule confirmed receiving a complaint alleging possible non-disclosure of assets under the country’s Leadership Code framework.

Authorities are examining allegations of illicit enrichment, money laundering and potential breaches of asset declaration requirements involving Among and individuals linked to her.

The developments have coincided with significant political shifts ahead of Uganda’s 12th Parliament.

The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), associated with Chief of Defence Forces Muhoozi Kainerugaba, recently withdrew support for Among and endorsed Defence Minister Jacob Oboth Oboth for the Speakership.

The move has reshaped the leadership contest and added to the political pressure surrounding the investigations.

By Sunday evening, neither police, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), nor Among’s legal representatives had issued an official statement confirming or detailing the seizure of the device.

As the investigation progresses, digital evidence is expected to play a central role in determining the direction of the case.

The outcome could have broader implications for accountability, governance and political dynamics within Uganda’s leadership structures.
