NAIROBI, Kenya — Former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju has been admitted to Karen Hospital after his health reportedly deteriorated following his dramatic arrest linked to investigations into his recent disappearance.
Tuju was taken to the private medical facility shortly after his lawyers raised alarm over his physical condition, claiming he had been injured during the arrest. His legal team insisted that he required urgent medical attention before participating in any police interrogation.
The development marks the latest twist in a rapidly evolving case that has drawn national attention, blending elements of alleged abduction, political tension, and questions over law enforcement conduct.
The former minister had earlier resurfaced after going missing for days under unclear circumstances, only to be arrested by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
Authorities have indicated that Tuju is a central figure in an ongoing probe into what investigators have described as a possible “staged abduction.” He is expected to record a detailed statement outlining his movements, the circumstances under which his vehicle was abandoned in Karen, and the individuals he was in contact with during the period he was unaccounted for.
However, his lawyers argue that the manner of his arrest raises serious concerns. They allege that he was subjected to excessive force, resulting in injuries that necessitated immediate hospitalisation.
The case has exposed a widening gap between Tuju’s account and that of investigators.
Tuju has maintained that he went into hiding after being trailed by unidentified individuals in unmarked vehicles, whom he suspected to be security officers. He has cited this as the reason he avoided reporting to the police, expressing deep mistrust in law enforcement.
On the other hand, the DCI has signalled a more sceptical stance, suggesting inconsistencies in the sequence of events surrounding his disappearance.
The agency has emphasised its commitment to establishing the truth, warning against any attempts to mislead investigators or undermine public confidence in state institutions.

The incident comes against the backdrop of growing public scrutiny over alleged cases of enforced disappearances and the conduct of security agencies in Kenya.
Civil society groups have increasingly raised concerns about the use of unmarked vehicles and unidentified officers in security operations, issues that Tuju himself referenced in explaining his actions.
At the same time, the unfolding investigation intersects with Tuju’s ongoing legal disputes over high-value properties in Karen, including the contested Dari Business Park, which has been at the centre of a protracted financial and legal battle involving lenders.
Tuju remains under medical care as investigations continue, with authorities expected to proceed with questioning once he is deemed fit.
The outcome of the probe could have broader implications, not only for Tuju personally but also for public trust in Kenya’s criminal justice system and the handling of high-profile cases.
