LONDON, United Kingdom — Newcastle United dealt a significant blow to Chelsea’s Champions League ambitions as Anthony Gordon’s first-half goal secured a rare 1-0 away victory at Stamford Bridge.
The 18th-minute strike, which saw Gordon slide in after Joe Willock cleverly broke Chelsea’s offside trap on Tino Livramento’s pass, proved decisive. England manager Thomas Tuchel watched as the Magpies handed Chelsea their first home defeat by Newcastle since 2012.
Chelsea started strongly, with Wesley Fofana missing a free header and subsequent opportunities falling to Alejandro Garnacho, Cole Palmer, and Enzo Fernandez. However, Gordon capitalised on a defensive lapse to give Newcastle the lead.
VAR dismissed a penalty appeal when checking whether Reece James had fouled Malick Thiaw, allowing the game to continue.
Chelsea continued to press, with Palmer denied by Newcastle goalkeeper Rob Sanchez, who had been recalled for the fourth time in five matches. Sanchez also produced a superb save to block Jacob Ramsey’s effort just before half-time.
In an attempt to overturn the deficit, Blues manager Liam Rosenior introduced striker Liam Delap for defender Malo Gusto early in the second half.

Delap immediately tested goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, while Garnacho’s shot was blocked by Newcastle defender Sven Botman. Another penalty claim for Chelsea was waved away when Nick Woltemade clipped Palmer’s foot inside the box.
Gordon came close to extending Newcastle’s lead with a curling effort in the 69th minute. Chelsea threatened sporadically, with Delap shooting over on his weaker foot, flicking a header wide, and Trevoh Chalobah heading over from a corner.
Captain Reece James, fresh off signing a six-year contract on Friday, hit the post from a free-kick in stoppage time, while Joao Pedro’s looping header nearly snatched a late equaliser.
Chelsea left Stamford Bridge to boos after consecutive home defeats in the Premier League and Europe. The result lifts Newcastle to ninth place, while Chelsea remain fifth, a game ahead of Liverpool, who host Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
