KAMPALA, Uganda — Opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, widely known as Bobi Wine, has cast his ballot at his designated polling station in Magere, as Ugandans vote in the high-stakes 2026 general election that will determine the country’s next leadership.
Bobi Wine arrived at the polling centre on Thursday morning accompanied by his wife, Barbie Itungo Kyagulanyi, drawing large crowds of supporters and significant media attention, a reflection of the intense national and international focus on the contest.
Speaking briefly before entering the polling station, Bobi Wine urged citizens to participate peacefully and actively in the democratic process, underscoring the importance of every vote in shaping Uganda’s political future.
The Electoral Commission (EC) said voting was continuing across the country under close supervision, with officials working to ensure that polling stations remain operational and that voters are able to cast their ballots in what authorities have described as a free, fair and transparent process.
Officials acknowledged that some polling stations experienced minor logistical and technical challenges earlier in the day but said corrective measures were being implemented to avoid disruptions and guarantee that all eligible voters are accommodated.

Political analysts note that the early participation of high-profile candidates such as Bobi Wine could boost voter confidence and turnout, particularly in regions where the opposition enjoys strong grassroots support.
Across the country, citizens have been urged to follow instructions from polling officials, maintain calm at voting centres, and report any irregularities encountered during the process.
As voting continues nationwide, attention remains focused on symbolic strongholds such as Magere, where voters are exercising their constitutional right in what many observers regard as one of the most consequential elections in Uganda’s modern history.
