NAIROBI, Kenya — The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has officially concluded that there is no evidence of foul play regarding the death of former Lugari Member of Parliament, Cyrus Jirongo.
In a comprehensive statement released on Monday, January 5, 2026, the DCI clarified that the 64-year-old politician died as a result of a tragic road traffic accident.
The veteran politician lost his life in the early hours of December 13, 2025, while driving to his rural home in Lugari.
According to the investigative report, Mr. Jirongo’s vehicle was involved in a devastating head-on collision with a Climax Coach bus along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway.
To ensure a transparent and exhaustive inquiry, the DCI interrogated several individuals who were with the former MP in his final hours, alongside direct witnesses of the crash.
Among those who provided voluntary accounts were high-ranking political figures, including National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, and politicians Rebman Malala and Ibrahim Sambuli. The trio had been with Jirongo at the Karen Oasis restaurant on the evening of December 12, just hours before the accident.
Statements were also recorded from:
- Ann Lanoi Pertet (Jirongo’s wife)
- Tiras Kamau Githinji (Bus Driver)
- Manoah Ekokwa Alukoya Olasi (Bus Conductor)
- Staff members from the Eagol petrol station, where Jirongo was captured on CCTV performing a U-turn.
“Further, seven passengers from the ill-fated bus presented themselves to assist in the investigation, and their statements were also recorded,” the DCI stated in their report.
Forensic evidence and final findings
A multi-agency team processed the scene, utilizing forensic analysis of amateur videos, the bus manifest, and digital evidence.
CCTV footage from the Eagol Petrol Station was a critical component in reconstructing the vehicle’s movements prior to the collision.
The DCI has now firmly established that the event was an unfortunate road traffic accident.

The investigative file is set to be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for final directions once the remaining administrative processes are wrapped up.
Following his death, Jirongo was laid to rest on December 30, 2025, at his family homestead in Lumakanda, Kakamega County. In light of the high-profile nature of the case, the DCI has warned against the spread of unverified rumors.
The department urged both political leaders and the general public to exercise restraint and refrain from making speculative statements that could prejudice the legal process or incite public anxiety.
