HOMA BAY, Kisumu — A police officer is currently under arrest and facing charges after fatally shooting a woman in Homa Bay County during a night vigil held in honor of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
The victim, identified as Lucy Oketch, was tragically killed near the entrance of the Homa Bay Police Station late Thursday night while walking home.
The incident unfolded as supporters of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) marched through Homa Bay town following a candle-lighting event intended to mourn the passing of Mr. Odinga.
According to County Police Commander Lawrence Koklem, the group proceeded through the town streets before congregating at the police station.

Commander Koklem stated that some of the mourners began throwing stones inside the police station, prompting an officer assigned to the Occurrence Book (OB) desk to fire as the crowd advanced on the facility.
Ms. Oketch was struck by what has been confirmed as a stray bullet and subsequently succumbed to her injuries at the Homa Bay County Referral Hospital.
The police officer responsible for firing the weapon was immediately apprehended and is being held at the same Homa Bay Police Station.
