University students across six African countries will access Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro and other AI tools free for 12 months.

NAIROBI, Kenya — Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., has unveiled a new initiative to accelerate digital transformation and bolster higher education across Africa by offering a free 12-month AI Pro Premium subscription to eligible university students.

The program, announced in Nairobi, targets students aged 18 and above in six African countries: Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.

Through this offer, students will gain access to Google’s most advanced artificial intelligence tools, specifically designed to enhance learning, rigorous research, and creative innovation.

Google stated that this initiative expands on its long-term investment in Africa’s digital ecosystem, building upon successful ventures like the Google for Startups Accelerator Africa and the Digital Skills for Africa program.

Alex Okosi, Managing Director for Google in Sub-Saharan Africa, emphasized that the introduction of the powerful Gemini 2.5 Pro—a key feature of the AI Pro plan—is aimed at equipping young Africans with crucial AI literacy skills to prepare them for an increasingly technology-driven job market.

Okosi highlighted the continent’s potential: “We are seeing a new wave of innovation in Africa, driven by the energy and ingenuity of our young people.”

He further elaborated on the program’s vision: “By providing students with access to our most advanced AI tools, we want to empower them to not only excel in their studies but also become critical builders and shapers of the future. This offer is about democratizing access to technology and giving African students the skills to compete and lead on a global stage.”

    Features and access

The Google AI Pro plan includes features optimized for academic and creative productivity, such as AI-assisted research summaries, code debugging capabilities, and detailed step-by-step explanations for complex academic topics.

The subscription also provides access to NotebookLM for efficient note organization and Veo 3, a tool that converts text prompts and images into short, high-quality videos suitable for presentations.

Additionally, students will receive 2 TB of cloud storage across Google Drive, Gmail, and Photos, offering ample capacity for large academic and creative projects.

Students interested in leveraging the offer must verify their university status and activate their 12-month subscription by visiting the dedicated redemption page at gemini.google/students. The limited redemption window runs for 60 days, from October 7 to December 9, 2025.
