NAIROBI, Kenya — The Government of Kenya, through a partnership between Huduma Kenya and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), has announced that smart driving licence biometric services are now available at 15 selected Huduma Centres nationwide.
This new initiative is designed to offer greater convenience for motorists seeking to apply for or upgrade to the modern digital licence.
In Nairobi County, the services can be accessed at the General Post Office (GPO) Huduma Centre and the Kibra location. The service is also available in other key regions, including Mombasa, Kisumu, Nyeri, Garissa, Machakos, Embu, Meru, Kakamega, Eldoret, Thika, Kericho, Nakuru, and Kisii, as confirmed by a notice on the Huduma Kenya X handle on Friday.
The Smart Driving Licence is a card-based document featuring enhanced security, including a microchip that stores biometric and personal identification data, a digital photograph, a signature, the driver’s class, and a record of any traffic offenses.
Intended to replace the older red booklet licences, it seamlessly integrates with NTSA’s Transport Integrated Management System (TIMS) to streamline verification for law enforcement and other agencies.
To apply for the new licence, motorists must first register or log in to the NTSA TIMS portal using their Kenyan National Identity Card, KRA PIN, and a phone number. After selecting the option to apply for or renew a Smart Driving Licence and making the required payment, applicants can then book an appointment at their preferred Huduma Centre for biometric capture.
During the appointment, applicants are required to present their National ID, their old driving licence if upgrading, and the payment receipt. NTSA officials then capture the necessary fingerprints, a digital photograph, a signature, and other biometric information.

Following the appointment, applicants will receive an SMS confirmation when their Smart Driving Licence is ready for collection from the chosen Huduma Centre.
The cost for a three-year Smart Driving Licence is Sh3,050, which covers all application, processing, and issuance fees.
The same fee applies for renewal. Motorists are advised to ensure their TIMS account is active and that all required documents are in order before attending their appointment.
Given that the services are limited to selected locations, booking an early appointment is encouraged to secure a preferred slot.
