Madagascar knocks out CHAN 2024 co-host Kenya on penalties to advance to semifinals

NAIROBI, Kenya — Madagascar’s remarkable journey at CHAN 2024 continued as they secured a spot in the tournament’s semifinals after a thrilling 4-3 penalty shootout victory over co-hosts Kenya.

The first quarterfinal, played at the Moi International Sports Centre in Nairobi on Friday, August 22, 2025, ended in a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes of intense, end-to-end football.

After a goalless first half, Gor Mahia defender Alphonce Omija put Kenya in the lead just three minutes into the second half. However, Madagascar quickly responded.

Elgeco Plus midfielder Fenohasina Razafimaro equalized from the penalty spot in the 71st minute, leveling the score. The match remained tied through the full 90 minutes and an additional 30 minutes of extra time, leading to a penalty shootout.

In the tense shootout, Madagascar emerged victorious with a 4-3 win. Nantenaina Randriamanampisoa, Lalaina Cliver Rafanomezantsoa, Fenohasina Razafimaro, and Toky Rakotondraibe all successfully converted their kicks, with only Heriniaina Randrianirina missing.

For Kenya, Mohammed Siraj, Daniel Sakari, and Sylvester Owino found the back of the net, but Michael Kibwage and Alphonce Omija missed their attempts, much to the agony of the co-hosts.

When Omija then dragged his attempt wide, Madagascar seized the moment.

Toky Rakotondraibe stepped up and drove his kick low past Omondi, sparking celebrations from the Malagasy players and bench.

Madagascar now advance to the semi-finals, maintaining their reputation as giant-killers on the African stage.

Kenya, meanwhile, exit with their heads held high after igniting the nation’s passion in their first CHAN appearance.
