Uganda Cranes thrash Guinea to revive CHAN 2024 hopes

KAMPALA, Uganda — The Uganda Cranes revitalized their CHAN 2024 campaign with a dominant 3-0 victory against Guinea at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, on Friday. This commanding performance was a powerful response to their earlier 3-0 defeat to Algeria.

Reagan Mpande set the tone for the Cranes, scoring the opening goal with a precise header. The lead was extended in the 62nd minute when Allan Okello confidently converted a penalty.

The final goal came from substitute Ivan Ahimbisibwe, who sealed the win with a composed finish past Guinea’s goalkeeper, Ousmane Camara.

The match also highlighted the crucial role of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). The VAR system was instrumental in key decisions, first confirming a foul on Allan Okello that led to Uganda’s penalty.

Moments later, it intervened again, overturning an initial penalty awarded to Guinea after determining that the contact from left-back Herbert Achayi was minimal.

Allan Okello, who was deployed as an inverted winger, delivered an exceptional performance, orchestrating much of Uganda’s attacking play and earning the man of the match award.

With this result, Uganda and Guinea are now level on three points in Group C. Algeria leads the group with four points, while South Africa is at the bottom with one point after drawing with Algeria.

The competition continues on Monday, August 11, 2025, with a double-header. South Africa will face Guinea, followed by a late kick-off between Uganda and Niger.
