NAIROBI, Kenya — The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has announced the commencement of nationwide compliance checks. In a notice issued on Thursday, July 31, the authority detailed a range of infractions for both drivers and passengers that could lead to legal repercussions during this enforcement period.

For motor vehicle owners and drivers, the NTSA released 11 key advisories. These include ensuring that their vehicles are roadworthy and possess a valid insurance certificate.

Owners and drivers of all Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) and Commercial vehicles are specifically advised to have valid inspection certificates. Furthermore, vehicles in these categories must be equipped with functional speed limiters that actively transmit data to the NTSA systems.

Additional requirements for PSVs include possessing a valid Road Service Licence (RSL) and valid PSV badges.

All PSV drivers and conductors are mandated to wear appropriate uniforms and comply with all stipulations of the PSV Regulations, 2024. Moreover, all PSVs must adhere strictly to their licensed routes.

Broadly, all drivers are required to hold valid driving licenses, vehicles must not be overloaded, and motorists must maintain their designated lanes and observe prescribed speed limits.

Crucially, the NTSA emphasized that no driver should operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol.

Passengers have also been issued five advisories aimed at enhancing their safety.

These begin with the directive to always wear a seatbelt when in a vehicle, irrespective of the journey’s duration.

Passengers are further urged to actively contribute to their safety by cautioning speeding and reckless drivers, refraining from boarding overloaded vehicles, and reporting drunk drivers.

To verify the validity of various PSV licenses before boarding, passengers are advised to utilize the NTSA Free Mobile App.
