Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has been appointed as the new head coach of Bayer Leverkusen, the German club announced on Monday.

Ten Hag succeeds Xabi Alonso, who guided Leverkusen to the 2023-2024 Bundesliga title and the German Cup.

Alonso was announced on Sunday as the new coach of Real Madrid, taking over from Carlo Ancelotti.

Dutchman Erik ten Hag departed Manchester United in October 2024 after a tenure of two and a half years that was largely considered disappointing, although he did secure the League Cup and FA Cup during his time at Old Trafford.
