KISII, KENYA — Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Okeng’o Matiang’i has officially announced his intention to contest the presidential seat in the 2027 elections.
Speaking in Keroka town during a homecoming event, Matiang’i stated that he has listened to the voices of Kenyans and will work to liberate the country and ensure its progress.
Thousands of residents from Kisii County and Nyamira County gathered in major towns to welcome Matiang’i back to the Gusii region.
This was his first return to the area since arriving back in Kenya from the United States two weeks prior.
“I want to tell you this, my friends, we have many challenges, but I want to ask you, please, let us not lose hope in our country. Our nation is built on resilience, so let us unite together so that we can move forward…. Will you allow me to talk to all Kenyans from all the counties?,” Matiang’i said, as the crowds cheered in response.
In Kisii town, the size of the crowd necessitated a relocation to Gusii Stadium to prevent a potential stampede.
Kisii Governor Simba Arati and Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo are among the leaders who have pledged to travel across the country to support Matiang’i’s presidential campaign.
