Eliud Kipchoge ends three-year marathon drought with record-breaking Melbourne victory

Kenya’s two-time Olympic champion clocked 2:09:10 in Australia, setting a course record and delivering a major boost to his seven-continent marathon tour.

Eliud Kipchoge, the two-time Olympic champion, who turns 42 in November, won the 2026 Melbourne Marathon men's race on Sunday, 11 October, in a course record time of 2:09:08.

Melbourne, Australia — Kenyan marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge has returned to the top of the marathon podium, winning the Nike Melbourne Marathon in Australia on Sunday, October 11, in a course-record performance that ended his three-year wait for another victory over the distance.

The 41-year-old crossed the finish line in 2 hours, 9 minutes and 10 seconds, shaving two seconds off the previous course record to win on his debut at the Melbourne event. The victory was his first marathon win since the Berlin Marathon in September 2023 and the 17th marathon victory of his career, according to Reuters.

Kipchoge’s performance offered a timely reminder of his enduring competitiveness after a challenging period in which several major races ended without a podium finish.

Australian runner Thomas Do Canto finished second in 2:10:35, while compatriot Reece Edwards took third place in 2:15:57, according to Australia’s ABC News.

Kipchoge pulls away in final 10 kilometres

Kipchoge made his decisive move inside the final 10 kilometres of the 42.2-kilometre race, gradually separating himself from his challengers before finishing strongly inside the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

The Kenyan’s victory was particularly notable because he had not won a marathon since Berlin in 2023, where he secured his fifth victory at the German race.

His return to winning form in Melbourne came after a difficult run of results in major competitions, including a 10th-place finish at the 2024 Tokyo Marathon and his failure to finish the marathon at the Paris Olympic Games that year.

In 2025, he finished sixth at the London Marathon, ninth at the Sydney Marathon and 17th at the New York City Marathon, according to reports on his recent racing career.

Kipchoge’s latest result therefore represents more than a course record. It is a significant competitive milestone for an athlete whose career has been defined by consistency, longevity and historic achievements.

Speaking after the race, Kipchoge said he had enjoyed the atmosphere along the route and the support from spectators.

He also welcomed the opportunity to compete alongside younger runners, saying the experience allowed him to inspire Melbourne’s running community.

Melbourne marks third stop on global marathon tour

The victory also advances Kipchoge’s ambitious project, Eliud’s Running World, through which he aims to complete a marathon on each of the world’s seven continents.

The initiative was announced in 2025 and combines competitive running with a broader effort to inspire communities and support causes through the Eliud Kipchoge Foundation, which focuses on education and environmental sustainability.

Melbourne is the third stop on the tour, following the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon in South Africa in May and the NB42K Porto Alegre Marathon in Brazil in July.

Kipchoge finished 16th in Cape Town in 2:13:29 before placing 12th in Porto Alegre in 2:18:42. Those results made the Melbourne win an especially important turnaround in his global campaign.

The tour is designed to unfold over approximately two years and includes a marathon in Antarctica as well as stops across the other six continents. The project is intended to demonstrate the unifying power of running while encouraging participation among people of different ages and backgrounds.

Melbourne’s race was Kipchoge’s debut at the event and only his second visit to Australia. The finish inside the MCG added another distinctive setting to a career already associated with some of the sport’s most celebrated venues.

A champion navigating a new chapter

Kipchoge remains one of the most accomplished marathon runners in history.

He won Olympic marathon gold at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, becoming one of the defining athletes of the modern era. He also held the men’s marathon world record from 2018 until 2023, when it was broken by fellow Kenyan Kelvin Kiptum.

Although Kipchoge’s recent results have differed from the dominant performances that established his reputation, his Melbourne victory shows that he can still compete at a high level over the marathon distance.

The race also underlines the distinction between his current global tour and the pursuit of major championship titles. The project places additional emphasis on engaging local communities and inspiring participation, even as Kipchoge continues to test himself against elite fields.

His latest triumph gives that mission renewed momentum and provides a powerful response to questions about his competitiveness following several difficult races.

What the Melbourne win means for Kenya

Kipchoge’s record-breaking victory adds another international achievement to Kenya’s long-distance running legacy.

His success comes as Kenyan athletes continue to attract global attention across road racing, track events and cross-country competitions. For aspiring runners, his career offers a prominent example of sustained excellence, discipline and the ability to recover from setbacks.

The Melbourne result also gives Kipchoge a strong foundation for the remaining stages of his continental challenge. The locations and dates of all future stops have not yet been confirmed.

For now, the Kenyan star can celebrate a victory that combines a new course record with the end of a lengthy wait for a marathon title.

After three years without winning a marathon, Kipchoge has once again crossed the finish line first — and added another memorable chapter to a career that continues to evolve beyond conventional sporting milestones.

The record in Melbourne is both a competitive achievement and a fresh statement of intent from a marathon great who is not yet finished running.
