ODM rift deepens as Sifuna faction eyes presidency, Oburu tells rebels to leave

NAIROBI, Kenya — A website associated with the ‘Linda Mwananchi’ faction within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has been temporarily taken offline following what party officials described as large-scale cyberattacks and technical challenges.

Edwin Sifuna, the Secretary General of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), said the platform had attracted an overwhelming response shortly after it was launched on March 13, with thousands of users signing up within hours.

However, the surge in traffic, combined with cyber threats, forced administrators to suspend the site temporarily while engineers work to strengthen its infrastructure and incorporate suggestions from supporters.

“We have taken the site offline to address the issues and incorporate your ideas. We ask for your patience,” Sifuna posted on X.

The Linda Mwananchi platform is understood to be part of broader political mobilisation efforts by a faction within ODM that is advocating a more confrontational political stance ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Supporters say the platform was intended to serve as a digital hub where citizens could register, share views and participate in discussions on governance, accountability and electoral reforms.

Its launch comes at a time when political parties across Kenya are increasingly relying on digital platforms and social media networks to organise supporters, mobilise campaigns and shape public narratives.

The emergence of the Linda Mwananchi movement has also highlighted deepening divisions within ODM, one of Kenya’s largest opposition parties.

The faction promotes the “one-term” political narrative and includes several prominent leaders within the party, among them:

  • Babu Owino, Embakasi East MP
  • James Orengo, Governor of Siaya
  • Godfrey Osotsi, Senator for Vihiga
  • Richard Onyonka, Senator for Kisii
  • Caleb Amisi, MP for Saboti
  • Anthony Kibagendi, MP for Kitutu Chache South
  • Caroli Omondi, MP for Suba South
  • Majimbo Kalasinga, MP for Kabuchai

Political observers say the group has increasingly positioned itself as a reformist bloc within ODM, calling for a more assertive opposition posture against the current administration.

Opposing them is the ‘Linda Ground’ faction, which is associated with ODM leader Oburu Oginga.

This camp is said to favour a broad-based political arrangement, including potential cooperation with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Both factions have recently held rallies and public meetings across the country as they attempt to consolidate support and shape the party’s future direction.

The temporary shutdown of the Linda Mwananchi website highlights the growing importance, and vulnerability, of digital tools in modern political organising.

Cybersecurity experts note that political websites often become targets during highly charged political periods, particularly when they are used for membership drives, political messaging or fundraising efforts.

For now, ODM officials say the site will remain offline until technical improvements are completed and security systems are strengthened.

The developments underscore the intensifying internal debate within ODM as the party navigates strategy, alliances and leadership ahead of the next electoral cycle.
