NAIROBI, Kenya — The government of Israel has announced new scholarship opportunities for Kenyan students seeking postgraduate training in sustainable development and community leadership.
In a notice issued on March 14, the Embassy of Israel in Kenya confirmed that applications are open for a Master of Arts programme in African Sustainable Communities at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.
The programme aims to bring together students from across the world to explore solutions to social, environmental and economic challenges facing African societies.
“Applications are now open for the MA programme in African Sustainable Communities at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (Israel),” the Israeli mission in Kenya stated.
“This interdisciplinary programme explores the major challenges and opportunities shaping African societies today, bringing together students from around the world to study sustainable development and social change,” it added.
Focus on sustainable development
The interdisciplinary programme combines academic coursework with practical fieldwork, focusing on issues such as community development, environmental sustainability, governance, and social transformation.
According to programme organisers, successful candidates will spend their first academic year studying in Israel, before returning to Africa to undertake a field research project or community development initiative.
The course is designed for professionals and graduates interested in careers in development policy, sustainability, governance, and community leadership.
Scholarship opportunities available
Selected applicants will be eligible for both full and partial scholarship funding, covering key academic costs for the programme.
While details of the financial package vary, scholarship recipients are expected to receive support for tuition fees and potentially other expenses depending on the funding arrangement.

The Israeli mission has encouraged Kenyan universities, development organisations, and policy institutions to share the opportunity with qualified candidates.
Growing academic cooperation
Educational exchanges between Kenya and Israel have expanded in recent years, particularly in areas such as agriculture, water management, technology, and sustainable development.
Israel is widely recognised for its innovations in desert agriculture, irrigation technology, and climate adaptation, areas that are increasingly relevant to African countries facing climate change and food security challenges.
Institutions such as Ben-Gurion University have established programmes aimed specifically at training African professionals to apply sustainable development solutions within their home communities.
Application deadline
Interested applicants have until May 1, 2026 to submit their applications through the university’s official admissions portal: africa-master.
Programme administrators say the course is particularly suited to candidates who want to work in public policy, non-governmental organisations, international development agencies, and community-based initiatives across Africa.
