AFCON 2025: Nigeria’s Super Eagles edge Tanzania 2-1 in gritty Group C opener
Alex Iwobi of Nigeria challenged by Simon Happygod Msuva of Tanzania during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Afcon match between Nigeria and Tanzania at the Complex Sportif de Fes in Fes, Morocco on 23 December 2025.

FES, Morocco — Nigeria’s Super Eagles launched their bid for a fourth Africa Cup of Nations title with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Tanzania on a rain-soaked pitch in Fes on Tuesday night, overcoming spirited opposition and treacherous conditions to claim maximum points in their Group C opener.

Under the floodlights at the Grand Stade de Fès, Eric Chelle’s side displayed composure and resilience, seeking redemption after the disappointment of failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and renewing belief in their ambitious “Naija 4 the Win” campaign.

Nigeria asserted dominance from the opening whistle, pinning Tanzania deep in their own half with sustained possession and early attacking intent. Akor Adams came closest inside the opening 12 minutes, forcing Tanzania goalkeeper Zuberi Foba into two outstanding reflex saves.

The breakthrough arrived in the 36th minute when defender Semi Ajayi rose above the Tanzanian backline to power home a precise header from Alex Iwobi’s teasing cross. It marked only the Hull City defender’s second international goal and gave Nigeria a deserved halftime advantage.

Tanzania emerged from the interval with renewed urgency and stunned Nigeria in the 50th minute. A floated delivery from Novatus Miroshi was met by Charles M’Mombwa, whose composed finish pulled the Taifa Stars level and ignited celebrations among the 11,444 spectators.

But the Super Eagles responded almost immediately.

Just two minutes later, Ademola Lookman — Africa’s reigning Footballer of the Year — demonstrated his class, cutting inside onto his favored left foot before curling an unstoppable strike into the top-right corner to restore Nigeria’s lead and silence the Tanzanian revival.

Nigeria’s defender Semi Ajayi scores the first goal against Tanzania during the match.

The goal proved decisive, as Nigeria managed the closing stages with maturity, absorbing pressure and seeing out the contest to secure all three points.

The victory carried echoes of history for Nigerian fans. The Super Eagles also defeated Tanzania in the opening match of the 1980 AFCON, a tournament that concluded with Nigeria lifting its first continental title.

Tanzania, still seeking their maiden win at AFCON finals, will attempt to regroup when they face Uganda in Rabat in an all-East African encounter.

Nigeria remain in Fes and will next meet Tunisia on Saturday, with another victory likely sealing early qualification for the Round of 16.
