AFCON 2025: Late Zambia strike earns 1-1 draw with Mali in Group A opener
Final score: 1-1, the Zambians equalized against Mali in stoppage time thanks to a goal by Patson Daka, the Leicester striker.

CASABLANCA, Morocco — A dramatic injury-time header from Patson Daka salvaged a crucial 1-1 draw for Zambia against Mali in a Group A encounter at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) at the Stade Mohammed V.

The result leaves both sides two points behind host nation Morocco, who currently lead the group following a 2-0 victory over Comoros on Sunday.

Mali dictated the tempo for much of the match and appeared set for a win after Lassine Sinayoko opened the scoring just after the hour mark. Sinayoko lashed home from close range after his initial attempt from a corner kick was blocked.

The Eagles had a prime opportunity to extend their lead just before halftime when Nene Dorgeles was brought down in the box by Matthews Banda. El Bilal Toure stepped up for the penalty kick, but his low effort was superbly saved by an alert Zambian goalkeeper, Willard Mwanza.

Mali coach Tom Saintfiet, managing his third AFCON, will prioritize clinical finishing ahead of their next match against the hosts.

Zambia’s late relief amidst coaching controversy

Zambia, the 2012 AFCON winners, were largely overwhelmed physically by the Malians until a late resurgence. In the final moments, Banda’s lofted cross found Leicester City forward Daka, whose header secured a vital point.

The result provides a morale boost for Zambia, which is navigating organizational challenges following the departure of former manager Avram Grant in October. His replacement, Moses Sichone, is currently embroiled in a dispute with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) over his qualifications.

CAF informed the Football Association of Zambia that Sichone’s UEFA A License is insufficient for the head coach position at the finals, as tournament rules now require a CAF A or UEFA Pro License.

However, a temporary agreement allows him to sit on the bench under the title of assistant coach due to his prior contract as Grant’s assistant.

Zambia will remain in Casablanca for their next fixture against Comoros on Friday, while Mali travels to Rabat for a crucial showdown against Morocco.
